There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over the Boyne Valley once the sun starts going down — cattle grazing slow across the fields, the light turning gold, and not a sound beyond the odd bird settling in for the night. It's the kind of evening that's easy to miss if you're always somewhere else.
If you're staying out this way, a few things are worth building into your evening rather than rushing past.
Take the long way back
The back roads around Ardee weren't built for speed, and that's exactly the point. Wind the windows down, take the route that skirts the fields instead of the main road, and let the drive be part of the evening rather than something to get through.
Sit outside for longer than feels necessary
Whatever the weather is doing, a few extra minutes outside at dusk — on a step, a terrace, wherever — tends to be worth it. This is cattle country; you'll hear them before you see them, and there's something settling about that sound.
Leave the itinerary loose
Newgrange and the Hill of Slane are both worth the visit, but the Boyne Valley rewards an unplanned afternoon just as much as a scheduled one. Some of the best hours here are the ones with nothing booked.
